Awake.AI is a Finnish company operating in the cargo shipping industry. With their comprehensive system, the Awake Platform, they work towards making port operations safe, effective, and sustainable. Their actions target people working in ports that handle operational aspects of cargo shipments – port authorities, terminal and ship operators, harbor masters as well as cargo owners.
To globally cut maritime emissions by 10 % until the year 2030, Awake.AI created an Ecosystem program to which we, as Espeo Software, are a part of. The Ecosystem consists of technology, research, and software development companies that partner up with Awake.AI to help them digitize the industry of maritime logistics.
As we have previously assisted Awake.AI in one of the app development projects, they decided to expand our successful cooperation in a UX-oriented venture.
CHALLENGE
Since there are many people and companies involved in handling the ship operations, Awake.AI wanted to improve the communication between them.
Awake.AI have implemented communication capabilities in their platform. A very user-friendly experience will allow the operators to adapt and utilize the platform for the best results.
Along the process, Awake.AI came to a realization that they would like to try out a new process which would ensure the validity of the further development of their solution and business decisions they make.
Our role
We have been in continuous contact with Awake.AI as we have worked on a joint development project together before. Together with our Lead UX Designer, we reached out to them to offer a possible solution. They decided to work with us on a new project after learning about our approach and the experience in the UX.
The goal of our cooperation was to improve the communications in Awake.AI’s platform.
Our role was to ensure that the improved solution would be based on the actual needs of the users and prevent Awake.AI from spending time developing features that are not validated.
We used User Centered Design methodology as it involves the user at every stage of the process. First, we discovered user needs during interviews, prototyped the solution and validated it with usability testing. To read more about this process, head to our UX page.

Our approach
We organized a Design Sprint Workshop in which three representatives of Awake.AI took part in. During the multi-day workshop, we focused on performing exercises such as user journey mapping, analyzing the reference solutions and prioritizing user needs. OUTCOME
As a result of our cooperation, Awake.AI’s target users will get a feature that they need with much improved user experience. This means that Awake.AI will save money and time while developing a feature which will improve day-to-day work of their users.
When it comes to the direct benefits for the client, they received a validated and super-detailed design ready to develop with low risk. Moreover, together with Awake.AI we created a plan of how to implement the changes in a steady and agile way.
One of the biggest advantages of our cooperation is that Awake.AI has now gained a broader understanding of their end users’ needs.
