The power of the wellbeing at Espeo Software

Probably many people wonder if it is a trend or a real need. At Espeo, it started with the expectations of our crew. We listen to our employees and implement programs and initiatives expected by our team. Our mission is to build a friendly workplace where people feel satisfied and listened to.

Several months of activities are behind us. Anna Kasprzak-Kuberka, who is a true passionate about wellbeing, took the responsibility for the program. During the last weeks, we organized various activities to promote mental and physical health. Read the article to get to know more about our passion for designing a better workplace.

You will find the answers on the following questions:

Wellbeing of Espeo Crew

What is wellbeing and what is its value at modern workplace?

Although there is no universally accepted definition, commonly it comprises the presence of positive feelings and moods (e.g., contentment, happiness), the absence of negative emotions (e.g., depression, anxiety), satisfaction with life, fulfillment, and positive functioning. Wellbeing can be defined as a favorable attitude toward life and a positive feeling.

Together with employee mental health, they were ranked as a major priority by 68 percent of HR leaders in the Future Workplace 2021 HR Sentiment study. According to the Gallup Institute’s findings, contentment at work benefits everyone. Employees that are satisfied produce lower rotation, ranging from 26 to 61 percent. Accordingly, they are 43 percent more productive and 86 percent more innovative than their counterparts.

I am sure it is worth caring for people is the highest priority, and introducing activities supporting wellbeing in the organization. For this reason, I aim to convey good and positive energy in the company, support employees, and propose pro-health solutions to implement wellbeing at Espeo.

In uncertain and turbulent times, mental and physical health become some of the challenges for the organization. With a high level of wellbeing, people have a sense of purpose and energy to carry out tasks and challenges. Satisfied employees are able to use their full potential. Therefore, emotional, physical, mental, financial, and professional wellbeing in the workplace is so important. Consequently, more and more companies in Poland are beginning to understand its value.

When has the passion for wellbeing started? Why has it appeared at Espeo?

Wellbeing emphasizes the need to take care of human health. In private and at work, it appears the same. I am interested in a holistic approach to human health, which unites the body, emotions, mind, and spirit. I attended the first online conference on this topic, and I decided to educate myself about wellbeing.

When the pandemic began, it was a time of isolation. It caused many health problems. My colleagues shared that they also don’t feel well. The stress appeared with frequent headaches, back and spine pains, malaise, and fatigue. The conclusion was that we should do something to make ourselves feel better. I learned about wellbeing from my sister, who returned from Australia. The idea was already well-known over there.

It brings me great satisfaction to implement and run these initiatives. I believe there is a need for that within our crew. Therefore, my mission is to monitor the needs of people and the organization. I can create assumptions and implement them to develop a friendly and efficient workplace. I want to inspire people to make small positive changes. My main aim is to develop a culture of well-being and health that will foster the commitment and professional fulfilment of the Espeo Software employees.

What initiatives have been already organized at Espeo?

Our focus is on mental health, mindfulness, effective stress management, and taking care of the digital balance. There are few webinars behind us. First, we discussed the “4 pillars of health” to answer the question of how to support our health and positive attitude. Last time, we had a chance to participate in the „Preventive care is the way to longevity” webinar with dr. Jakub Chwiećko. He explained how to look after the health and what to do to stay healthy for longer.

The meeting was an occasion to receive plenty of practical advice. Also, we had time to ask our personal questions. Recently, we held the first Espeo Health Day in our office in Poznań! We believe that prevention is better than cure. Therefore, out of concern for the wellbeing of Espeo employees, we invited everyone to take part in preventive screenings and blood tests.

Espeo Health Day

A while ago, all our crew got a box with health-supporting snacks and gifts. I share all the initiatives, recommendations, and improvement ideas in a dedicated Slack group. Briefly, that is a place where people can exchange their needs and inspirations about wellbeing.

We create an open and caring organizational culture, thanks to which people will have more effective wellbeing support and will feel even better. That’s all ahead of us, because the physical and mental health of Espeo Software employees is essential to us.

What is my wellbeing pattern? Inspirations and guidelines to improve lifestyle with the idea of wellbeing.

Wellbeing indicates happiness and comfort. I am constantly learning about improving my lifestyle to make it healthier. Personally, I use the Kaizen method. I implement changes in small steps and regularly discover the power to improve daily life with them. I find a healthy lifestyle a way of continuous improvement.

My inspiration is Agata Pelc, a trainer, and consultant from the Wellbeing Institute. The organization began to gather around practitioners, enthusiasts, and professionals of wellbeing. Consequently, they inspired a concept development in Poland.

Then, Martin Seligman introduced a model in positive psychology. It defines the 5 elements of a good and fulfilled life. According to PERMA, there are the following essentials of Wellbeing: P-Positive emotions (joy, curiosity, inspiration, appreciation), E-Engagement involvement (flow, concentration), R- Positive relationships (cooperation with people), M – meaning, and A – Accomplishment.

Anna Kasprzak-Kuberka, Senior Administration Specialist & Wellbeing Coordinator at Espeo

While spreading the knowledge about wellbeing, I get to know what has a positive effect on me. Thus, my focus is to find a balance. I swim, use the sauna, walk in the forest, and relax in contact with nature. I also appreciate the effects of relaxation and physiotherapeutic massages. Therefore, I use aromatherapy and clear my mind by listening to music. When I am tired, I accept this state of my body and rest. To summarize, I do what makes me happy and improves my mood and wellbeing. That’s what I want to inspire people for.

Green tech: what it is about and why you should keep an eye on its development in 2022

Despite its relative youth, the green technology market has attracted a considerable amount of interest. Some of the reasons for this are the growing consciousness about climate change and the depletion of natural resources. Going green and being eco-friendly is becoming more and more popular: not only when it comes to consumers but also organizations.

Many people think being green simply means recycling and turning off the lights but there is more to the topic. Especially when it comes to new technologies, where green tech has taken the lead. Green technology, cleantech, green software, environmental technology – if you have ever come across those terms and wondered what they were all about, this article is for you.

Table of contents:

What is green tech? Definition and its purpose

The term “green technology” refers to the use of technology and science to create environmentally friendly products and services. By combining environmental science with many innovative solutions, green tech helps prevent climate damage in the future and mitigate the damage already done by reducing or eliminating the sources of it.

Green tech, which can also be addressed as an environmental technology, concentrates on sustainable innovation which factors in short-term and long-term environmental effects. Over the years, green technology has also grown into a booming industry that has attracted huge amounts of capital.

How is green tech different from cleantech

Green tech entitles the utilization of technology in processes of sustainable forms of energy production, whereas cleantech specifically refers to the products and services that in their core reduce energy consumption, waste, cost and environmental impact.

The main goals of green tech

Essentially, green technology aims to protect and restore the environment, conserve natural resources, and restore the damage inflicted on it in the past. The main goal of green tech is to minimize the negative impact of new technologies on the planet by using clean energy (alternative fuel sources and technologies that do less harm than fossil fuels). However, it has additional goals that consist of:

  • Finding new ways to fulfill our needs while reducing our negative impact on the environment.
  • Using resources more efficiently, reducing waste, and reducing pollution.
  • Replacing existing technologies with new eco-friendly ones.
  • Introducing new green technologies and creating jobs to support them.

How are these green tech goals accomplished?

The goals mentioned above can be accomplished thanks to the activity of green tech companies that utilize science-based technologies and methodologies. The business models of such companies often incorporate financial, social, and environmental sustainability. Moreover, by making profit, green tech companies are able to sustain and scale their businesses as well as increase the positive impact they make on the planet while reducing their carbon footprint as much as possible. The reduction of corporate carbon emissions has become an important part of business strategies. As a result, a growing number of corporations took a pledge to become carbon neutral. Apple is an example of a company which has made a commitment to achieve 100 percent carbon neutrality by 2030 for its supply chain and products.

History of green tech

While green tech has gained popularity in the modern age, elements of these business practices date back to the Industrial Revolution. Scientists began to note the ecological impacts of coal-burning industrial plants in the early 19th century. Since then, manufacturers have tried to minimize the environmental damage by altering production processes to produce less soot. During the Second World War, one of the biggest milestones was observed in the United States. As part of the war effort, more than 400,000 volunteers collected metals, paper, rubber, and other materials. After the war, scientists and doctors all over the world began warning about dangers that came with chemical pesticides and nuclear radiation. For many, that era is believed to be the genesis of the ecological movement that we can continue to see today. As time went by, more and more government bodies recognized the importance of protecting environmental resources. During this time, awareness-raising programs on household waste became increasingly popular. Another breakthrough occurred in 1970, when the Environmental Protection Agency was established. Its main accomplishments included establishing requirements for pollution and waste and mandating coal scrubbers as well as other clean technologies.

The most important areas of green tech

Some of the most important areas of green technology include:

Environmentally preferred purchasing

The policy of environmentally preferred purchasing entails purchasing goods that were made with energy-efficient methods.

Green building

Green building focuses on sustainability in the construction processes. It involves the use of environmentally friendly building materials, sustainable construction methods, as well as locating constructions in the most appropriate locations.

Green chemistry

In green chemistry, the goal is to design new chemicals that can replace those that have a negative impact on the environment.

Green nanotechnology

The primary aim of green nanotechnology is to produce new nanomaterials that minimize the negative impact we have on the planet.

Green energy production

One of the most well-known areas of green tech is green energy production. Using renewable energy sources, it is focused on developing new ways of generating electricity and fuel.

Green software

In the context of software, green tech means using solutions that have minimal impact on the environment. Green software makes it possible to implement needed changes in a quicker and more efficient manner. Microsoft created Principles of Sustainable Software Engineering which help establish if the software is really green. This document consists of a set of competencies for designing, building, and running sustainable software applications.

When does green tech actually come into play? Examples of green tech products in everyday use

Although we might not realize it, we are surrounded by green technology in almost every aspect of our lives. A few typical applications for green tech solutions include recycling wastewater, producing electricity through solar panels, and use of wind turbines. Electric vehicles, which reduce the very negative impact of gas vehicles, and cloud storage, which replaces hard drives that require a large amount of electricity, are other examples of cleantech solutions that are getting increasingly popular.

Nevertheless, we can also see that cleantech is very present in our immediate surroundings. LED lighting is a good example. LED bulbs consume less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and are commonly used in many households. This also applies to programmable thermostats, which are currently gaining traction. These low-cost green tech products make it possible to automate and schedule temperature adjustments, thus saving both energy and money.

Green tech: what it is about and why you should keep an eye on its development in 2022

The importance of environmental technology

Many studies have examined the negative impact humans have on the environment. Deforestation, pollution, overpopulation, and burning fossil fuels are some of the ways in which humans impact the physical environment. Such actions have dire consequences: climate change, soil erosion, poor air quality, and undrinkable water. Today, when so much technology surrounds us, it becomes more critical than ever that those environmental issues are taken seriously. Thanks to green tech, the environmental situation can be improved. Ultimately, the more environmentally friendly innovations we invent and use every day, the less polluted our planet will become. Using green technology, the problem of global warming can be solved, while creating clean energy and making the world a more sustainable place.

Benefits of green technology

Green tech has a lot of benefits. Below we share a list of the most important ones:

  • Green tech solutions don’t emit any harmful substances to the environment.
  • As the technology market grows and consumers become more environmentally conscious, cleantech products give them the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint and resource use.
  • It requires less cost for maintenance. As a result, the operating cost and hence overall cost in the long run can be decreased.
  • Green tech uses renewable natural resources which won’t ever run out.
  • The usage of green technology slows down the effects of global warming due to reduction in CO2 emissions.
  • The emergence of new green tech companies stimulates the economy by creating new jobs.

Disadvantages of green tech

Despite its long list of advantages, green technology is not without downsides. They consist of:

  • A very high initial investment or implementation cost.
  • The technology is still new to most people, so it will take some time for it to become commonly used.
  • Green technology is still advancing and many of the products are in the R&D stage.
  • The installation and implementation of green technology based systems and products are difficult due to the shortage of skilled human resources.
  • In most countries, green technology-based policies have not been finalized yet.

Software development in green technology: an example

As a software development company, we have worked on many green tech-related projects over the years. One of them was in cooperation with a Finnish company Ensto where our team delivered expertise in the latest trends and technology. Ensto produces charging stations for electric vehicles and was in need of updated software for an existing hardware system. Our designer created the interactive admin panel in Invision and handed it over to front end and back end developers to build the code base.

The update in the panel was especially important for Ensto’s end-clients who buy EV charging devices and want to track electricity usage. We built a modern and visually appealing front end for them. We mainly worked on the software for the electric vehicle charging stations. Each station collects vital usage data and compiles it in an intuitive display dashboard. You can find more details about this project here.

The state of green tech in 2022 and its future

The industry of green technology is constantly growing. As shared in the “Green Technology and Sustainability Market by Technology: Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2021–2030” report, in 2020, the global green technology and sustainability market size was valued at $10.32 billion and is projected to reach $74.64 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 21.9% from 2021 to 2030. Environmental awareness and the growing concern of organizations and individuals about global warming will only continue to enhance the growth of the green technology market. Furthermore, governments all over the world are starting to invest in green technology businesses to decarbonise the economy and make their countries more energy efficient. An example of such an initiative is the funding announced by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in the United Kingdom. In addition to carbon capture projects, the funding will be used to strengthen energy efficiency in UK homes and businesses by finding cleaner, greener ways to heat and power them. We predict that more and more funds like this will be established in the near future.

Welcome Pack at Espeo Software: a box loaded with our culture and values

In many companies a welcome pack has become a standard procedure aimed at making the new employee’s first day in the company more attractive and pleasant. At Espeo Software, we strive to give something more than just standard gadgets – our aim (apart from achieving team affiliation) is conveying the culture and values that guide us.

From this article you will learn:

What’s inside the Espeo Welcome Pack?

Espeo hoodie

“For colder days, running trails or industry conferences. Wear it proudly on your wherever you go!”. We have recently created an Espeo sweatshirt that hits the spot. We want everyone from the Espeo team to have an item of clothing that will stand out from the crowd. This is the case with the sweatshirts that our employees wear every day, not only in the office. They just make lifes cozier.

Filtered water bottle

We try to be ecologically aware and we believe small changes in everyday habits make a big difference and help our planet. Using a filtered bottle allows us to save time, money, and, most importantly, reduce wasteful plastic production. A little change makes a big difference.

Notebook made out of recycled paper

Even though we’re an IT company, we know sometimes it’s better to write things down in a traditional way.

“Finding Sisu” book

Finland is a huge part of our DNA. We want our employees to get to know Finns’ amazing way of thinking, habits and traditions. They’re usually surprised how unique Finnish culture is! On the other hand, each of our Finnish employees will find a book about Polish culture and our approach to life in their package. Thanks to this, we are able to understand each other even better and get to know everyone’s perspective.

The list goes on – except for necessary work equipment (Macbook or Dell- it’s all up to you!), we also attach a personalized welcome card including the information about the new employee’s Buddy, who is ready to tell him or her more about Espeo’s spirit, our company, and answer all the questions that will surely come up. In addition, it includes details about our main values that lead us in our daily work and will surely be a guide for the new person hired.

Welcome Pack at Espeo Software: a box loaded with our culture and values

We asked one of our new team members to share her thoughts on the welcome pack she’s received:

“Frankly speaking, I have never received such a pleasant surprise from an employer (and believe me I have worked for various companies). The last thing I expected was a welcoming pack I received during my first onboarding day at Espeo Software: it was a big box with a red ribbon on it and I could help open it. I have never felt so excited in my life!

The box contained all the necessary things that helped me understand the philosophy and approach to work and clients of the company. Moreover, the gesture showed me that the company cares about its employees indeed. I received a warm hoodie, a huge amount of candies, a welcoming letter from the head of HR (which was really striking to me, in a good way), a book that will make my communication with Finnish clients easier and more valuable ( I’m currently reading it), a bottle with removable filter and much stuff that is useful on daily basis in every office worker’s life (e.g. pens, a notebook etc.).

The best part of it is that all of the presents have a company’s logo on them so I know that wherever I go people will notice it and I will be proud to show it off to them and be a part of a great company.”

Alina Pohorila, QA Engineer at Espeo Software

Espeo’s welcome pack is a comprehensive set of information and especially selected elements that introduce new team members to our company, culture, and values. We are more than happy when seeing their smiling faces opening our welcome boxes.

Relocation to Poznań: a guide through Wielkopolska’s capital (Part 1)

Currently, people migrate for many reasons, such as for work, family, or economic aspects. Surely, moving to another city, or even to another country often causes stress and fear of the unknown. However, at the end of the day, it is worth thinking about the positive aspects of relocation, especially when it comes to work, which could turn out to be much more. At Espeo Software, we are open and willing to welcome new team members from all over the world.

After all, you may find that relocating to Poznań, where the company’s headquarters is located, is the best decision you have ever made. Why? Read more and find it out.

In this article you will find:

Relocation to Poznań: a guide through Wielkopolska’s capital (Part 1)

Relocation – what’s there for you?

Why is relocation something you shouldn’t fear? These advantages of relocation should reassure you:

1) Relocation can broaden your horizons

Starting work in a new place is associated with new projects, learning about a different work style or different strategies. In addition, it is often also connected with wider possibilities of getting more workshops and certificates as well as using more advanced technologies. It only works to our advantage, broadening our horizons and skills.

2) Company’s help in the process of relocating and settling

Moving on your own is difficult. However, when you relocate for work, in most formal and technical matters, you will get help from the company you are coming for. For instance, at Espeo Software we help new employees find accommodation, open a bank account as well as help with many formal matters from the moment they decide to move.

3) Relocating gives you an opportunity to travel more and visit new places

Relocating does not only mean getting to know the destination city, but also having a better access to other cities and even nearby countries. Maybe from this place you will find cheaper flights to the country you’ve always dreamed of? After all, the decision to move to one place opens the gate to getting to know another parts of the world and thus experiencing completely new things!

4) The opportunity to experience new cultures and traditions

If your relocation takes place to another country, you will undergo completely new cultural experiences and be able to try traditional meals from a given part of the world. You will gain friends with different cultural codes and their traditions. As a matter of fact, these relationships can turn into friendships that’ll bring something worthwhile into your life. Important to realize is that those experiences are not possible only by moving to a new country. Even relocation to another city allows you to get to know the traditions prevailing in that city or region. By moving to Poznań, you will get to know not only the Poznań dialect but also traditional dishes from the Wielkopolska region and the amazing history of this city.

5) Last but not least – the relocation package

Some companies offer special packages for new employees who decide to relocate. This makes it much easier to start in a new place and relieves the new person from many costs associated with moving. In Espeo, it is a bonus of up to PLN 6,000! Thanks to this, you don’t have to worry about any unplanned and unexpected expenses.

Relocation from our developer’s perspective

We asked Aleksei, our Blockchain Developer who relocated from Russia to work with us, what his perspective on relocation is:

“First of all, it is kinda like resetting your everyday life. For some period of time even regular visits to the grocery felt “new” and adventurous: new language, new products, new rules, costumes etc. You realize that some of this new stuff is better than where you come from, some things are worse, maybe more annoying, so your general feeling is a combination of both pros and cons. In addition, learning new languages is something I enjoy doing as a hobby, and the relocation gives me an opportunity to do it on a daily basis. Nevertheless, it’s normal to sometimes miss how easy it is for you to communicate naturally with people speaking your native language.

When it comes to Poznań in particular, I really like the scale of the city – it’s not too big, not too small. You have everything you would expect from a city but not having to suffer from the consequences of living in a megapolis – like hours of commuting and overpriced rent. Moreover the bike infrastructure and lake nearby is also something I enjoy a lot. The geographic position is also a big plus after both Russia and northern Finland where there are no other cities for hundreds of kilometers. Here I can travel very easily to most of Europe and that’s amazing and something I probably have not fully grasped yet.”

Aleksei Shcherbin, Blockchain Developer at Espeo Software

Poznań in a nutshell

Have you ever wondered what it is like to live in the capital of Greater Poland? We are sure you will love this city! Poznań has many traditions that are visible at every step. Being the capital of the voivodeship, it also has a lot to offer for everyone.
